How to Combine Single-Sided Scans (Odd and Even Pages)

If you have a standard single-sided (simplex) scanner, digitizing a double-sided document usually leaves you with two separate PDF files: one containing all the odd pages, and another containing all the even pages.

Instead of manually dragging and dropping individual pages to fix the order, PDF Shuffler automates the process. Here is how to interleave your PDFs in seconds:

  1. Scan the fronts: Place your document stack in the scanner feeder and scan all the front pages. Save this file as your "Odd Pages" PDF.
  2. Scan the backs: Take that exact same stack of paper, flip it over, and run it through the scanner again to capture the backs. Save this as your "Even Pages" PDF.
  3. Upload your files: Select your Odd Pages file for step one, and your Even Pages file for step two in the tool above.
  4. Merge and download: Click "Shuffle & Combine." The tool will instantly weave the pages together in the correct sequence (1, 2, 3, 4...) and download the finished duplex document to your device.

Why is my second scanned file backwards?

When you take a stack of paper from the output tray and flip it over to scan the reverse sides, the physical order of the paper is reversed. This means your scanner reads the last page first, resulting in an "Even Pages" PDF that is completely backwards.

You do not need to physically reorder the paper before scanning. PDF Shuffler includes a built-in "Reverse second file" feature. Simply leave that box checked, and the tool will automatically read your second document backwards, perfectly syncing it with your front pages.

Is it safe to merge sensitive PDF documents online?

Most free online PDF mergers require you to upload your files to their external servers for processing. This creates a massive security risk if you are dealing with tax returns, legal contracts, medical records, or banking statements.

PDF Shuffler is 100% private. We use modern client-side browser technology. When you select your files and click combine, the entire interleaving process happens locally on your own computer's memory.

  • No Uploads: Your files never leave your device and never travel across the internet.
  • No Storage: We do not have a database. We cannot view, store, or log your documents.
  • No Limits: Because you aren't using our server power, there are no file size limits, hourly caps, or premium paywalls.

Whether you are organizing a few household bills or assembling a massive 500-page legal brief, your data remains secure and entirely in your control.
